Elon Musk’s social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, is testing free access to its Grok AI chatbot. Initially, it will only be available to Premium subscribers.
Grok, developed by Musk’s AI venture xAI, competes directly with ChatGPT and other popular AI tools, boasting features like text-based assistance and image analysis.
Until now, Grok’s capabilities, powered by Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.1 model, were restricted to paid users, but recent reports show free access testing in select regions like New Zealand.
The free version comes with usage limitations to manage server load while broadening user access. Free users can ask up to 10 questions every two hours with the full Grok-2 model and 20 with the Grok-2 mini model.
They are also limited to three daily image requests. Additionally, eligible users need accounts that are at least seven days old and linked to a phone number.
This move aligns with xAI’s growth strategy, aiming to gather user feedback, improve Grok’s performance, and attract a wider audience.
As more users explore Grok’s potential, X hopes to boost engagement and draw more subscribers to its Premium plans.
This expansion underscores Musk’s drive to compete in the AI space alongside major players like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
