WhatsApp Will Stop Working on Older Android Phones in 2025

Starting January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer support Android devices running on KitKat or older operating systems. These devices, many of which are over a decade old, will lose access to the app entirely.

Android KitKat was introduced in 2013, and while it served its time well, technology has moved forward. WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta, is focusing on adding more advanced features to the app. Unfortunately, older devices lack the hardware to support these updates, which also creates potential security risks.

Some of the affected phones include popular models like:

  • Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S4 Mini
  • Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
  • HTC: One X, Desire 500, Desire 601
  • LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini
  • Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia T, Xperia V

If you are still using one of these devices, it’s important to back up your WhatsApp chats to a newer phone before January 1. Without this, you may lose all your conversations and media stored on the app.

This is not the first time Meta has discontinued support for older devices. Earlier, it announced a similar update for iPhones running outdated iOS versions.

If your phone is on the list, now is a good time to upgrade to a newer device to keep using WhatsApp seamlessly.
