OpenAI has launched new ways to access ChatGPT, making it more convenient for users with limited internet access. Residents in the US and Canada can now call 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) for up to 15 minutes of ChatGPT access each month. Globally, users can also interact with ChatGPT via WhatsApp by messaging the same number.
These features allow users to access AI without needing high-speed internet or the ChatGPT app. OpenAI highlighted that this service is especially useful for people in areas with poor network coverage or those using basic phones.
While functional, the phone-based ChatGPT experience is more limited than the app. The AI can answer general questions, provide recipes, and share historical facts, but it cannot offer real-time data like weather updates. Users have reported mixed results, including occasional repetitive interactions.
The WhatsApp integration, while currently limited to text-based conversations, could soon expand to include features like AI-generated images. OpenAI also clarified that paid features for Plus and Pro users are not yet available on WhatsApp but may be introduced later.
OpenAI emphasized privacy, noting that conversations might be reviewed to prevent misuse but are not stored indefinitely.
This initiative is part of OpenAI’s “12 Days of OpenAI” campaign, aimed at making AI more accessible globally. Despite the growing competition in the AI space, OpenAI continues to innovate, expanding its offerings to meet diverse user needs.
