OpenAI Secures Cutting-Edge A16 Chips from TSMC for AI Innovations

OpenAI is making headlines with its latest move in AI hardware. The company has secured a spot to use TSMC’s most advanced chip technology, the A16 process, which will become available in 2026.

This cutting-edge technology, marking TSMC’s entry into the 1.6nm era, promises to push the boundaries of chip performance and transistor density.

Apple, a long-time TSMC partner, has already booked production capacity on the A16. Now, OpenAI is joining this exclusive group, underscoring its commitment to developing high-performance AI chips.

Initially, OpenAI had considered building its own chip manufacturing plant but later chose to collaborate with U.S. companies like Broadcom and Marvell for ASIC chip development.

These new ASIC chips will be produced using TSMC’s 3nm process family before transitioning to the A16 process. This partnership not only enhances OpenAI’s chip design capabilities but also amplifies its influence in the AI sector.

The A16 process is expected to lead to significant advancements in AI applications, benefiting both OpenAI and its partners.
