According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple intends to deploy data centers that employ servers using Apple silicon chips to power some of its planned iOS 18 capabilities.
Some of the most sophisticated artificial intelligence jobs scheduled for this year and beyond will be powered by M2 Ultra CPUs. According to reports, Apple expedited its server construction plans due to the popularity of ChatGPT and other AI products; future servers may include next-generation M4 CPUs.
While many functions can be completed on the device, more complex operations requiring online connectivity include creating photos and summarizing content. Further cloud-based servers would be required for a more capable version of Siri. Although Apple has always been concerned about privacy, the server team claims that Apple chips will automatically secure user privacy.
Although Gurman had stated that all of the upcoming iOS 18 features will operate on-device, some of these functions will use cloud services. Apple intends to use its servers for now, but it might eventually depend on servers from other businesses.
