Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, has announced the upcoming release of Edits, a video editing app positioned as a competitor to ByteDance’s CapCut. The app, currently available for preorder on the iOS App Store, is scheduled to launch on March 13, 2025, with an Android version in development.
In a video posted to Instagram, Mosseri described Edits as a comprehensive creative platform, offering tools like green screens, video overlays, AI animations, and voiceovers. The app also includes a dedicated inspiration tab, advanced camera settings, and collaborative features for sharing drafts with friends or collaborators.
For Instagram users, Edits integrates seamlessly with Reels, providing detailed insights, such as a live performance dashboard, follower engagement metrics, and data on viewer interactions, including skipped sections of videos.
The announcement comes as TikTok and CapCut face uncertainty in the U.S. due to ByteDance’s ties to China. While Mosseri did not directly address this context, the timing suggests Meta aims to fill the potential void left by the apps’ struggles.
“Edits is more than a video editing app; it’s a full suite of creative tools,” Mosseri stated, highlighting its broader appeal compared to CapCut.
Edits mark Meta’s latest effort to expand its offerings for creators and capitalize on the shifting landscape of short-form video platforms.
