Instagram, owned by Meta, is testing a new feature that allows users to reset their recommended content, providing a “fresh start” for Explore, Reels, and Feed suggestions.
This move aims to give users more control over their Instagram experience while ensuring safer, age-appropriate interactions, particularly for teens.
The reset tool will let users clear data that informs Instagram’s algorithm, effectively wiping past preferences.
Recommendations will then gradually adapt to new interactions. Additionally, users can review and unfollow accounts they no longer wish to see content from or adjust ad topics to refine their preferences.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, acknowledged that resetting recommendations might make the app initially feel less engaging as the platform relearns user interests.
However, the feature offers an effective way to regain control over content visibility when users feel dissatisfied with their feed.
While developed with teens in mind, the tool will soon be available globally to all users after testing. This comes alongside broader safety initiatives by Instagram, such as default teen account protections and regulatory compliance with new online safety laws like the UK’s Online Safety Act.
This tool aligns with industry trends, as platforms like TikTok have already introduced similar content reset features.
Instagram’s effort underscores Meta’s commitment to enhancing user experiences and addressing concerns about algorithm-driven recommendations.
