iOS 18 to Use AI to Summarize Notifications, Add to Calendar, and More

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to provide an auto-summarization function for alerts in iOS 18 as part of a series of new artificial intelligence capabilities.

In today’s edition of his “Power On” newsletter, Gurman revealed further clarity about what to expect from Apple’s first significant effort into generative AI at its upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference:

This includes services such as auto-summarizing iPhone notifications, providing a summary of news stories, transcribing voice notes, and upgrading current functions such as calendar auto-population and app suggestions.  There will also be some improvements to photographs in AI-based editing, but none of these capabilities will impress users using AI in Adobe Inc.’s apps for the past few months.

Gurman said that while Apple will primarily rely on on-device processing to power its AI capabilities, it will also distribute them through the cloud in data centers equipped with high-end Apple silicon chips developed for the Mac. He also stated that a ChatGPT-style chatbot will be conspicuously absent from Apple’s forthcoming AI features. According to reports, Apple officials have admitted to “playing catch-up” internally.

Apple’s first foray into AI is widely expected to be presented as part of previews of its next-generation software updates at WWDC, which starts on June 0-10.
